Trends always come full circle, even the ones we could happily go the rest of our lives without—I’m looking at you low-rise jeans. One trend that’s making its way back into the mainstream right now is big ‘90s blowouts. Recall the fluffy, volumized styles of Cindy Crawford, Alicia Silverstone and Danielle Fishel. Recently, we’ve seen hair volume increase, returning to its ‘90s glory. Pin straight hair that lays flat on your head? Ugh, as if!

Celebrity hairstylist Nathaniel Dezan noted that many ‘90s hairstyles made a comeback over the past year in addition to the fluffy blowout. “Feathered bangs, fun colors, pixie cuts, high (half up and full) ponytails, crimping, Bantu knots, twists, cornrows, space buns, box braids/micro braids, outward flips and natural, curly hair” have all had a bit of a resurrection recently.

The ‘90s were a golden age for hair and self-expression. “It was really about finding yourself, your individuality, in your own hairstyles, having fun and expressing who you are,” said Dezan. He believes that the return of the trend is aligned with the petering out of the pandemic. Big, bold volume serves as a gorgeous statement when you finally get to see friends and attend events.

Hairstylist April Story said she thinks the trend is making a comeback due to pop culture, noting that platforms like Instagram, TikTok and YouTube serve up some of our favorite ‘90s nostalgia, making us yearn for simpler times and bigger hair.

“If you decide to go all in and commit to a ‘90s haircut and style, see your favorite stylist at the salon. Don’t do it yourself!” advised Story. “During the consultation, explain you are going for a ‘90s vibe and show a few inspiration photos (don’t skip this step!). Your stylist can customize a look specifically for you and your ‘90s energy.”

When going to the salon, you could ask for a shaggy layered cut with shorter layers that will help frame your facial features, explained Dezan, which is perfect for a bold blowout. The blowout is also a great moment for curtain bangs to shine.
